What tarnish actually is (and isn't)

Real tarnish is a chemical reaction — sterling silver reacting with sulphur compounds in the air and slowly darkening. It's natural, harmless and reversible. Gold, on the other hand, doesn't tarnish at all; when a gold or gold vermeil piece looks dull, it's almost always surface build-up, which wipes off.

The good news either way: prevention is the same, it's free, and it's mostly about where your jewellery lives and when you put it on.

The five habits

• Jewellery goes on last. Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and sunscreen first, jewellery after everything has dried. The alcohols and chemicals in those products are the single biggest cause of dulling and discolouration.
• Take it off for the pool and spa. Everyday water is fine — we've covered showering and swimming here — but chlorine at pool concentration is genuinely hard on every metal, solid gold included.
• Rinse after the sea. Salt water won't ruin a swim, but a quick fresh-water rinse and a dry-off afterwards stops salt sitting in chains and settings.
• Wipe before you put it away. Ten seconds with a soft cloth removes the day's skin oils and product film — the raw material tarnish and build-up are made from.
• Don't sleep or gym in delicate chains. Less about tarnish, more about kinks and stress — but the sweat factor counts too.

Storage: the decision that does half the work

If your jewellery currently lives on a bathroom shelf, moving it is the single biggest improvement you can make. Bathrooms are warm and humid several times a day — ideal conditions for silver to darken and for residue to bond onto gold.

What works instead:

• A dry drawer or lined box in the bedroom, away from sunlight.
• Pieces separated — pouches or compartments stop chains scratching each other and tangling.
• An anti-tarnish strip tucked into the box if you wear a lot of silver. They cost almost nothing and absorb the sulphur that causes darkening.
• Chains done up before storage — a clasped chain can't knot itself.

For travel, a small pouch per piece beats one pocket full of everything. The damage jewellery picks up in transit is nearly always metal-on-metal scratching, not tarnish.

If a piece has already dulled

Don't reach for the strong stuff — most "tarnish removers" are made for solid silver and will strip the gold from vermeil.
