What Is Gold Vermeil? The Complete Guide
The honest answer
Gold vermeil (say it "ver-may" — it's French) is a thick layer of real gold bonded over solid sterling silver. That's it. Two precious metals, one piece of jewellery, and a price that doesn't require a payment plan.
It's also one of the most misused words in jewellery, which is why we've written this guide. Plenty of brands say "vermeil" when they mean ordinary plating, and plenty of shoppers pay vermeil prices for gold-coloured brass. Once you know what actually counts as vermeil, you can't be caught out.
What legally counts as vermeil
For a piece to be called gold vermeil, it has to clear three bars:
- The base must be sterling silver — solid 925 silver, a precious metal in its own right. Not brass, not copper, not stainless steel.
- The gold must be at least 10k — ours is 18k, which gives that rich, warm tone rather than a brassy yellow.
- The gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick. For comparison, standard gold plating is often under half a micron. Vermeil's layer is five to ten times thicker, and that's the difference between a finish that wears off in months and one that lasts years.
If a brand can't tell you the base metal and the gold thickness, treat "vermeil" on the label with suspicion.
Vermeil vs plated vs filled vs solid
The quick version of a comparison we've written about in full here:
- Gold plated — thin gold over brass or steel. Cheap, fades fast, and the brass underneath is what turns skin green.
- Gold vermeil — thick gold over sterling silver. Real gold look and feel, hypoallergenic, lasts years, costs a fraction of solid.
- Gold filled — a mechanically bonded gold sheet over brass. Durable, but the base is still brass and the style range is limited.
- Solid gold — gold all the way through. Lasts forever, priced accordingly. Lovely if a ring costs what you'd happily pay; unnecessary for an everyday earring stack.
Can you wear it every day? In the shower?
This is the question we get most, and the short answer is that vermeil is made for everyday wear — water itself doesn't hurt gold or sterling silver. Showering, washing your hands, getting caught in the rain: all fine. The things that genuinely shorten its life are chemicals, not water — perfume, chlorine, harsh cleaners. We've answered this properly in Is gold vermeil waterproof?, including the pool and spa caveats.
As for lifespan, a well-made vermeil piece with basic care keeps its colour for years, and we've broken down exactly what to expect in How long does gold vermeil last? If you've heard vermeil "tarnishes", that one's mostly a myth — what people see is usually product build-up that wipes straight off.
Why we chose vermeil for Florence
When Florence started, the brief was simple: jewellery you can put on and forget about. Worn to work, to the gym, to the beach, without the ritual of taking it off at every sink. Solid gold does that but prices most people out of wearing it casually. Plated jewellery is priced for casual wear but doesn't survive it.
Vermeil is the honest middle: real 18k gold where it touches the world, solid sterling silver underneath, hypoallergenic through and through, and priced so you can build a collection rather than save up for one piece. That's why every gold piece in our best sellers is 18k gold vermeil — and why we're happy to put the materials on every product page.
How to buy vermeil with confidence
Wherever you shop (though we'd love it to be with us), check three things: the listing names sterling silver as the base, states the gold karat, and the brand stands behind it with a warranty. Ours is 90 days against manufacturing faults, and our FAQ covers the rest — sizing, shipping, exchanges and care.
Frequently asked questions
What is gold vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a thick layer of real gold — at least 2.5 microns — bonded over a solid sterling silver base. Both metals are precious, which is what separates vermeil from ordinary gold plating over brass or steel.
Is gold vermeil real gold?
Yes. The surface of a vermeil piece is real gold, usually 14k to 18k. The difference from solid gold is what's underneath — sterling silver instead of gold all the way through — which is why vermeil costs a fraction of the price.
What's the difference between gold vermeil and gold plated?
Two things, base metal and gold thickness. Vermeil must be gold over sterling silver at 2.5+ microns. "Gold plated" is usually a much thinner layer, often under 0.5 microns, over brass or another base metal — which is why plated pieces fade fast and can turn skin green.
Is gold vermeil good quality?
Good vermeil is the best-value way to wear real gold daily. The thick gold layer holds up to everyday wear, the sterling base is hypoallergenic, and a well-made piece lasts years with basic care.
Is gold vermeil hypoallergenic?
Generally yes. Both metals in vermeil — gold and sterling silver — are kind to sensitive skin. The reactions people get from cheap jewellery come from base metals like nickel and brass, which vermeil doesn't put against your skin.
